Facilities Planning
Updates
"Growing Reproducing Disciples of Jesus Christ"
September 15, 2015
After numerous schemes and ideas had been discussed and modified through the summer, the committee agreed upon a master plan to pursue and present to the congregation. The Master Plan is a long term facilities plan that would provide for significant growth. This would not be built all at once and some of it may never get built, but it provides an available plan if necessary. The committee has asked the architect to design the separate phases and provide cost estimates for each phase that can be presented to the congregation. The committee would like to have a special meeting in early November (or there abouts) to present the plan to the congregation and answer questions they may have. We are excited about what God is doing and the future ministry opportunities the Lord may provide. Thank for your prayers!

The Facilities Planning Committee met to work through details of the expansion plan and discuss potential options for sanctuary chairs. Discussion for the expansion involved determining nursery bathroom placement and size, entry hallway options, rear church access, upstairs classroom layout, and some other miscellaneous items. The committee agreed to place the nursery bathroom in the new west expansion to the east side of the nursery/puggles rooms and to have five classrooms on the west side of the upstairs. West side entry access will be explored further with potential of expanding the gable end that provides more hallway width in the new hallway. Further work will need to be done with the architect.
Neal Johnson presented information on Sanctuary chairs and provide cost estimates for five different chair brands. It was agreed to order samples from four of those brands and examine the quality firsthand. Neal was going to contact the companies and request the samples. One company required a small shipping fee (it was thought to be around $6) and the committee agreed to have them send the chair to give a variety of comparisons.

The Facilities Planning Committee met with Randy Kling from the EAPC to review ideas about expanding the church in conjunction with the recommendations from Steve Anderson. Randy showed two different ideas, one with a phased approach that would eventually include a new sanctuary and the second involved a new foyer and classrooms to the south and the sanctuary extended to include the current foyer. Scott Anderson also had some design ideas, one of which involved building to the north of the building. After some discussion the committee combined some ideas and recommended that Randy pursue further the idea of expanding the sanctuary to the north and opening up the current foyer for additional AWANA circle space and fellowship space. The office, classroom, and nursery space would the be added to the west with a strip of dual parking in front of the church on the north side and more to the west.
Plans were also made to have two informational meetings regarding the facility plans: one on December 16th at 7 PM and one on December 28th at 9:15 AM during the regular Sunday School hour (there will be no Sunday School that Sunday). Anyone who would like more information or has questions is welcome to attend.

The Facilities planning committee met with Steve Anderson on Monday and shared his thoughts as a result of his interviews, surveys, and assessments. He noted that there definitely are space needs and that the church desires to reach more people with the gospel of Christ which is a healthy trait. He said that there are basically three options that the church has: do nothing and simply stay static as far as growth, programmatic changes to free up room to reach more people for Christ, building additions and repurposing to provide more space. He also pointed out that we are not at a place right now financially for a major building program, but that we could get there in a short time if desired. If a building program was desired, his proposed solution to deal with all the various space needs would involve a new Sanctuary area with nursery, offices and some classrooms, and then a repurposing of the old sanctuary and offices. The Facilities Planning Committee will be meeting on Thursday October 30th to discuss Steve's suggestions and prayerful consider the course the Lord may want us take. Please continue to keep the facilities planning committee in your prayers.

Steve Anderson, our church consultant, left this morning after spending five days in interviews with various ministry leaders and ministry groups in the church. He asked a lot of good questions and provided some interesting initial insights regarding space, ministry, and strategy. He will process the information gleaned through the interviews along with other data he has accumulated and compile a congregational survey that we would like all regular attenders to complete. Currently we are looking at passing these surveys out after the service on September 28. It takes about 10 minutes to complete and we would like to have everyone fill it out right then. We will provide surveys for those who know they won't be there the 28th but would still like to complete one. You would need to complete it by the 28th, as we will be mailing the surveys back to Steve on the 29th. This will be an opportunity for all of you to give your input into the process as we seek God's direction regarding the future facilities of Riverside. If you have any questions about the process, please don't hesitate to ask one of the committee members: Scott Anderson, Linda Arnegard, Denise Overmoe, John Peterson, Blaine Rekken, Scott Sheets.

The facilities committee met and looked at some options for consultants and discussed some reference calls regarding Steve Anderson. The references were extremely positive regarding the work and value that Steve Anderson brings. After some discussion, the committee agreed that Steve Anderson seemed to be the best fit as a consultant for our church. Pastor noted that he would contact Steve the next day and inform him. Here are some links regarding his work: AMI Services overview, AMI needs and feasibility, AMI website.

We had a brief meeting as committee after church to discuss looking into a church consultant. After our initial meeting with the EAPC, we felt that we didn't have a strong understanding of what we actually need facility wise as a church. There was a consensus that we needed some outside expertise in helping us determine our actual facility needs for ministry and what type of budget we could reasonably work with if we did have a need to build. It was decided to call a congregational meeting to discuss the possibility of hiring a church consultant.

We had our third meeting as a facilities planning committee and met with Wayne from the EAPC. We discussed some ideas but no decisions made. We are still trying to figure out what we actually need as a church to contribute to ministry. We scheduled another meeting July 7th at 7PM.

We had our second official Planning Committee meeting to discuss the facility needs of our church in fulfilling our mission of growing reproducing disciples of Jesus Christ. The members of the committee had talked with various department chairs to ascertain any facility needs that they recognized for their departments. We heard reports from CE, AWANA, Youth, Special Events, Trustees, and Elders. We discussed a number of ideas and suggestions that have been made and decided that many of these areas can be addressed in the overarching plan through our meetings with the engineer. Four main areas we want to address include storage, adequately sized classrooms along with rooms that could be used by LIFE groups, a large enough multi-purpose/gym area for AWANA games as well as fellowship events, and sanctuary seating.
Minutes from the May 5th meeting.
